Abstract
Employee motivation is critical to the success and sustainability of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), which play a pivotal role in economic growth, innovation, and job creation. This study examines the challenges SMEs face in motivating employees, the interplay of intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, and the strategies to enhance engagement and productivity. Using a systematic review of existing literature, the study identifies key barriers, including resource constraints, leadership inefficiencies, high employee turnover, and limited career growth opportunities. The absence of structured human resource practices and the informal nature of SMEs further compound these challenges. The study underscores the significance of intrinsic motivators, such as autonomy, recognition, and personal growth, in fostering long-term engagement, particularly in resource-limited settings. Extrinsic factors, including competitive pay and profit-sharing, are critical for addressing foundational employee needs. Leadership styles, specifically transformational and participatory approaches, emerge as key drivers of motivation, trust, and organizational performance. Additionally, innovative strategies, such as the use of digital HR tools, employee engagement programs, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, are highlighted as effective solutions to address motivational challenges in SMEs. The findings contribute to existing knowledge by providing actionable insights for SME managers, policymakers, and stakeholders to enhance workforce motivation through cost-effective and context-specific approaches. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for holistic strategies that integrate intrinsic and extrinsic motivators, leadership development, and innovative practices to ensure employee satisfaction, organizational success, and long-term sustainability. Future research is encouraged to explore region-specific dynamics and emerging trends in workforce management.
