Abstract

On March 15, 2018, the municipal boundaries of Berekum were divided, resulting in the per-urban town being left without a dump site. The selection of a new dump site is crucial as landfill locations can have adverse effects on the surrounding environment and economy. To determine the most suitable site, a multi-criteria decision-making approach using GIS integration was utilized. Ten criteria, including surface water, settlement, and land use, were considered, and the Analytic Hierarchy Process and Ratio Scale Weighting methods were used to obtain an indicator map. A weighted linear combination method was applied to derive weight, and the results were compared to estimate the proportion of pixels for conformance and non-compliance. Three areas were identified as potential dump sites, with 4.8384 km2 being classified as suitable, 14.803km2 as good suitability, and 28.44 km2 as ideal suitability. The integration of these maps and the application of GIS allowed for a comprehensive analysis of the criteria, resulting in the identification of suitable locations for a dump site in Berekum Municipality.
