Abstract
It is a well-known fact that West Africa has the world's fastest-growing population. Despite the country's huge mineral, human, and natural resources, West African governments have been unable to deploy these resources to fulfill the fundamental needs of its teeming population. This study investigated the impact of population growth and unemployment on economic growth in some selected West African countries, using the period from 1980 to 2019. The data used were extracted from the World Bank indicator. The data collected were analyzed using panel least square, correlation analysis, unit root test, and trend analysis. The result obtained revealed that there is a negative significant relationship between the unemployment rate and GDP for the period under study in West Africa while the population has a positive effect on GDP in West Africa. The study recommended among others that government should ensure job creation in the economy, especially in the agricultural and manufacturing sector to promote economic growth in the region.
